Mega-star, wife to Ben Affleck and busy mom of three (Violet, 8, Seraphina, 4, and Samuel, 1), Jennifer Garner has a lot of things on her mind. Sun health is one of them. As the brand ambassador for Neutrogena, Garner is a passionate advocate for skin-health awareness.
We had a chance to talk to the actress about the sneaky way to put sunscreen on kids, how she juggles family and career, and her secrets to feeling beautiful and staying fit.
On why sunscreen matters:
“One person every hour dies from melanoma, and it is our most preventable cancer! One in five Americans will get skin cancer in their lifetime. That is crazy. And all we have to do to prevent it is to wear sunscreen daily. It’s also important to go to a dermatologist once a year. Many doctors even provide free screenings. Get yourself checked out.”
On fitting it into her beauty routine:
“One of the things that I love about Neutrogena is that they put sunscreen in their products, so you don’t have to worry about it! If you’re putting on a moisturizer or make-up, like Neutrogena Healthy Defense Liquid Makeup, you’re protected just like that. Anything else you put on is gravy.”
On the tough task of putting sunscreen on her kids:
“Kids hate it. But it’s just non-negotiable. It becomes part of their routine before school, a play date, a swim lesson, or anything else they do: they have to put on sunscreen. If you have to bribe them, use a sticker chart. But, whatever it is, it’s going on. If your kids get one bad sunburn in their childhood, it can double their chances of skin cancer later in life, so you have to be vigilant. Sunscreen has to become a no-brainer. There are all different ways to apply it. The kids can rub it on their faces, and you can spray it on their bodies. You can have it in your car, in your bag, at home in every drawer. We trip over sunscreen in my house!”
On what makes her feel most beautiful:
“There are two different kinds of beautiful. There’s the kind of beautiful when you have your makeup on and your hair done and you’re all put together. That’s the kind of beautiful when your kids look at you and say, ‘Oh, you look like a princess.’ The other kind of beautiful is when you’re just laughing with friends or having a great night out. That’s the best kind.”
On juggling family and career:
“Every ball is in the air at all times. My husband and I have a great situation. When he’s not working, he can be at home with the kids. We also have a great nanny – don’t think we don’t. There’s a lot of help when it comes to juggling all of this. If I do a movie, it’s really intense and hard, but I have a great mother-in-law and a great mom. Everybody pitches in. But, I can’t do movie after movie after movie. There are tough choices to make, and I make them. But I’m lucky because I’m able to make them.”
On motivating herself to stay fit:
“I tell myself ‘Just 30 minutes!’ I just put on the clothes and get to the gym. Once you get started, usually you’re willing to keep it up. I also have to thank Valerie Waters, my trainer for 13 years. You can get her workouts online – they’re really easy to find. She can do a 20-minute workout that will have me sore the next day! When it comes to fitting in fitness, if you can’t make it to the gym one day, you just can’t. But then the next day, you have to go.”
Neutrogena is currently running a Buy 1 Donate 1 program running through the end of July. With the purchase of any Neutrogena product with SPF, a second one is donated to a family in need.
